Collingwood Music Festival presents Shéhérazade

“The closing event, Shéhérazade, starring the full lirico-spinto soprano Joyce El-Khoury with Serouj Kradjian and ensemble, was our festival’s grand finale. It occurred during the first day that the Government of Ontario loosened the restrictions for in-person concerts in our province, and we were finally allowed to bring in a small audience directly into our venue. At this point, we had finally mastered how to livestream and project our performances seamlessly at the drive-in, but now we had the additional hurdle of figuring out how to exhibit all of our new multimedia effects to an in-person audience!

Our performing artists played their hearts out that night, with the majority having experienced their first live concert in over 16 months. The concert featured an exotic blend of traditional masterworks, bringing Maurice Ravel’s Scheherazade alongside twentieth-century Lebanese songs and many other jewels of the East.

We projected a pre-recorded plein air painting session with local painter Bill Franks, who was mentored by A.Y. Jackson, one of the famed painters of the Group of Seven. Franks painted to Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion, and like the performance itself, it was mesmerizing.

We believe that a hybrid model of in-person and online options will remain an effective festival strategy for many years to come. It allows us to enjoy the intimacy of a traditional chamber music evening with the music we love and cherish, while leveraging the potential widespread reach of a broader audience base.

This event was made possible with the gracious support of Jane Moysey, REALTOR® Royal LePage Locations North, Brokerage, and recorded live on July 16 at 8:30pm.”
